MOT check — your questions

What's in an MOT history, what advisories mean, fines for driving without one, and 2026 MOT prices.

How do I check my MOT history for free?

+

Enter your UK vehicle registration above. CarOkay queries the official DVSA MOT History API and returns every test on record — pass/fail, advisories, mileage at each test, and the tester's comments. The lookup is free, instant, and doesn't require an account.

How far back does UK MOT history go?

+

Online MOT history starts from 2005 for most vehicles. Cars get their first MOT at three years old, then annually. If your car was first registered before 2005, you'll see all tests recorded from that point onwards.

What's the difference between an MOT advisory and a failure?

+

A failure (Major or Dangerous) means the car can't legally be driven away from the test, except to a pre-booked repair. An advisory means the tester noticed something deteriorating that doesn't fail today but will soon — typical examples are brake pads near the wear limit or a slightly corroded suspension component.

How often is the MOT database updated?

+

Within minutes of a test being submitted by the testing station. If your test happened today, allow up to a few hours for it to appear here. If 24 hours have passed and it's still missing, the station may not have uploaded it — contact them.

Can I be fined for driving without an MOT?

+

Yes. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT, and your insurance is automatically void — so any accident could land you with personal liability for damages. You can only legally drive an MOT-less car to a pre-booked MOT or repair appointment.

Does CarOkay predict what'll fail my next MOT?

+

Yes — once you've looked up a registration, our AI cross-references your past advisories, failure patterns, mileage trend, and known issues for your make/model to flag the items most likely to fail or trigger an advisory at your next test. Costs to fix are estimated too.

How much does an MOT cost in the UK?

+

The DVSA caps MOT fees at £54.85 for a Class 4 (car/light van), £29.65 for motorcycles up to 200cc, and £58.60 for larger motorcycles. Most independent garages charge between £35 and £50 — main dealers often charge the full cap.
