Good question
Questions Okay gets asked a lot
How much does it cost to replace a timing belt in the UK?
+
For most cars a timing belt replacement costs £300–£600 at a UK independent garage, or £500–£900 if the water pump is done at the same time, which is strongly recommended. Small cars sit at the lower end and premium or performance engines at the top. The belt kit itself is cheap — most of the bill is labour. Pick your model above for a model-specific figure.
Does my car have a timing belt or a timing chain?
+
It depends on the make, model and engine. Belts are rubber and must be replaced periodically; chains are metal and usually last the life of the engine. Many cars use different setups across their engine range — for example a petrol might use a chain while the diesel uses a belt. Some newer engines use a wet belt that runs in oil. Select your model above to see the belt-vs-chain breakdown by engine.
What is a wet belt and why does it matter?
+
A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, lubricated by the engine oil, rather than in a dry external casing. Engines like the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the PSA 1.2 PureTech (Peugeot, Vauxhall, Citroën) use them. The problem is that the belt can break down over time and shed debris that blocks the oil pump, risking serious engine damage, so strict oil changes and earlier replacement are advised.
What happens if a timing belt snaps?
+
On an interference engine — most modern cars — a snapped timing belt lets the pistons hit the open valves, causing bent valves and often piston and cylinder-head damage. The repair frequently runs to four figures and can write off an older car. That is why replacing the belt on schedule, by age as well as mileage, is far cheaper than risking a failure.
