Citroën C3 timing belt cost

Illustration of a Citroën C3
The short answer

Most C3s built between 2012 and 2023 use a 1.0 or 1.2 PureTech petrol whose timing belt runs inside the engine oil. The older 1.4/1.6 VTi petrols use a chain and the HDi/BlueHDi diesels use a conventional external belt. The C3 launched in 2024 finally moved to a chain-driven petrol — and unusually, even the plain manual got it. A timing belt change at a UK independent garage typically costs £210–£598 for a Citroën C3 (belt, tensioner and water pump), depending on engine.

Wet-belt warning

Some Citroën C3 engines use a wet belt that runs inside the engine in oil. These can shed material if neglected, blocking the oil pump and risking serious engine damage. Use the right oil, change on time, and have it inspected if you hear a rattle on start-up. Check the engine rows below to see if yours is affected — or see our full UK wet-belt engine list.

Does the Citroën C3 have a belt or chain?

It depends on the engine. Here's the belt-vs-chain breakdown for the main UK Citroën C3 engines, with typical manufacturer replacement intervals (always confirm against your own handbook):

EngineTypeInterval
1.1 / 1.4 TU petrol (2010–2013)
Old-school eight-valve engine with a conventional external cambelt. Cheap to change, but it will bend valves if it snaps, so do not run past the age limit on a low-mileage car.
Timing belt80,000 mi / 10 yr
1.4 / 1.6 VTi petrol (2010–2016)
Chain-driven, so no scheduled belt bill — but the BMW-designed EP6 chain and its hydraulic tensioner are known to stretch, typically at 50,000–70,000 miles. A cold-start rattle lasting more than a couple of seconds needs investigating.
Timing chainNo set interval
1.0 / 1.2 PureTech non-turbo petrol (2012–2023)
Yes — the 68, 82 and 83hp non-turbo PureTech is a wet belt too, which owners are routinely told it is not. The interval was cut to roughly 62,000 miles or six years, and specialists often advise sooner.
Wet belt (in oil)62,000 mi / 6 yr
1.2 PureTech turbo petrol (2015–2023)
The 110 and 130 turbo is the highest-risk engine in the car. The belt usually disintegrates rather than snapping, blocking the oil pickup and killing the engine through oil starvation. Stellantis covers it to 10 years / 112,000 miles if servicing was to schedule.
Wet belt (in oil)62,000 mi / 6 yr
1.4 HDi diesel (2010–2014)
Conventional dry external belt. Do the water pump and tensioner at the same time, because almost all the cost is labour.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.6 HDi / BlueHDi diesel (2010–2018)
Dry external belt. PSA originally quoted a much longer figure and later revised it down, so older paperwork may show an interval that no longer applies.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.5 BlueHDi diesel (2018–2021)
The belt is a normal dry one. What to worry about is the separate cam-to-cam chain inside the head, which stretches and can snap — rattle, oil consumption or power loss means get it checked. Stellantis covers the chain to 10 years / 150,000 miles.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.2 PureTech turbo petrol (2024 on)
The C3 launched in 2024 uses the third-generation PureTech with a timing chain — and unusually it got the chain on the plain manual 100hp version too, not just the hybrid. No wet belt and nothing scheduled.

Citroën C3 timing belt cost

For belt engines, a full timing belt service (belt, tensioner and water pump) at a UK independent garage typically costs £210–£598. Main dealers charge 30–50% more. Chain-driven variants have no scheduled change but cost more in labour if a chain fails.

Key things to know

  • Every 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech built up to 2023 is a wet belt, turbo or not. The common belief that the non-turbo 82hp version is exempt is wrong.
  • Quick physical check that beats any spec sheet: on the chain engine the oil filler cap is built into the engine cover. A separate filler cap means the older wet belt.
  • Diesel C3s changed from the 1.6 BlueHDi to the 1.5 BlueHDi in mid-2018 — only the later car carries the camshaft-chain issue.
  • The ë-C3 is electric and has no timing drive at all.

Good question

Questions Okay gets asked a lot

How much does a timing belt cost for a Citroën C3?

+

A timing belt replacement on a Citroën C3 typically costs £210–£598 at a UK independent garage in 2026, covering the belt, tensioner and water pump together. The exact figure depends on the engine and your area; main dealers charge more. Use our cost calculator to estimate the price for your specific car and region.

Does my Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech have a wet belt?

+

Almost certainly yes if it was built between 2012 and 2023 — and that includes the non-turbo 68, 82 and 83hp versions, not just the 110 and 130 turbos. The belt runs inside the engine oil and degrades chemically, shedding particles that block the oil pump pickup and starve the engine. Replacement is due at about 62,000 miles or six years, cut down from the original figure, and many independent specialists advise doing it sooner. Only the C3 launched in 2024 uses the chain-driven third-generation engine.

What happens if the timing belt snaps on a Citroën C3?

+

Its belt-driven engines are interference designs, which means if the belt snaps the pistons strike the open valves. That causes bent valves and often piston and cylinder-head damage — a repair that frequently runs to four figures and can write off an older car. This is why replacing the belt on schedule, by age as well as mileage, is far cheaper than risking a failure.
