Ford C-Max timing belt cost

Every Ford C-Max and Grand C-Max, from the 2003 Focus C-Max to the end of production in June 2019, has a timing belt — none use a chain. Almost all are conventional dry belts, but the 1.0 EcoBoost fitted from 2012 uses a wet belt that runs inside the engine in oil, and the C-Max was never updated to the revised chain version. A timing belt change at a UK independent garage typically costs £225–£640 for a Ford C-Max (belt, tensioner and water pump), depending on engine.

Wet-belt warning
Some Ford C-Max engines use a wet belt that runs inside the engine in oil. These can shed material if neglected, blocking the oil pump and risking serious engine damage. Use the right oil, change on time, and have it inspected if you hear a rattle on start-up. Check the engine rows below to see if yours is affected — or see our full UK wet-belt engine list.
Does the Ford C-Max have a belt or chain?
It depends on the engine. Here's the belt-vs-chain breakdown for the main UK Ford C-Max engines, with typical manufacturer replacement intervals (always confirm against your own handbook):
| Engine | Type | Interval |
|---|---|---|
1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 Duratec petrol (2005–2010) Focus C-Max era, dry external belt. Any surviving example is well past the time limit, so the belt's age is what matters, not its mileage. | Timing belt | 100,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 TDCi Duratorq diesel (2005–2010) Dry external belt. Broken belts on neglected examples are the usual reason these get scrapped. Change the water pump with it. | Timing belt | 100,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.0 EcoBoost petrol (2012–2019) The wet belt-in-oil engine. The C-Max never received the revised chain-driven version, so every 1.0 EcoBoost C-Max has a wet belt — there is no safe late model year. Ford has cut its wet-belt guidance to 6 years. | Wet belt (in oil) | 100,000 mi / 6 yr |
1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT petrol (2010–2018) Naturally aspirated Sigma engine with a dry external belt, offered in 85, 105 and 125PS forms. | Timing belt | 125,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.6 EcoBoost petrol (2010–2015) Four-cylinder turbo with a dry external belt. Replaced by the 1.5 EcoBoost in 2015. | Timing belt | 125,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.5 EcoBoost 4-cylinder petrol (2015–2019) Dry external belt. This is the four-cylinder 1.5, not the later three-cylinder engine, so it is not a wet belt. | Timing belt | 125,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.6 TDCi Duratorq diesel (2010–2015) Dry external belt. Replaced by the 1.5 TDCi in 2015. | Timing belt | 125,000 mi / 10 yr |
1.5 TDCi Duratorq diesel (2015–2019) Dry external belt, not a wet belt. Ford tightened the interval on later builds, so treat this as an upper limit. | Timing belt | 110,000 mi / 10 yr |
2.0 TDCi Duratorq diesel (2010–2019) Dry external belt in 115 to 170PS forms. Do the water pump at the same time. | Timing belt | 125,000 mi / 10 yr |

Ford C-Max timing belt cost
For belt engines, a full timing belt service (belt, tensioner and water pump) at a UK independent garage typically costs £225–£640. Main dealers charge 30–50% more. Chain-driven variants have no scheduled change but cost more in labour if a chain fails.
Key things to know
- No C-Max or Grand C-Max ever had a timing chain. Whatever engine you have, there is a belt change due.
- The 1.0 EcoBoost is the only wet-belt engine in the range, and it was never updated — the chain version arrived with the Focus Mk4 and Puma, after the C-Max had been left on the older platform.
- Production ended in June 2019, so even the newest C-Max has passed most time-based belt intervals. The calendar limit almost always falls before the mileage limit.
- Any 1.0 EcoBoost C-Max with a patchy oil-change history should be treated as a wet-belt risk: budget for the belt and insist the sump comes off so the oil pickup can be checked.

Questions Okay gets asked a lot
How much does a timing belt cost for a Ford C-Max?
+
A timing belt replacement on a Ford C-Max typically costs £225–£640 at a UK independent garage in 2026, covering the belt, tensioner and water pump together. The exact figure depends on the engine and your area; main dealers charge more. Use our cost calculator to estimate the price for your specific car and region.
Does the Ford C-Max have a wet belt?
+
Only if it has the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine, fitted from September 2012 until production ended in June 2019. That engine runs its timing belt inside the engine, submerged in oil. Ford never fitted the later chain-driven version of the 1.0 EcoBoost to the C-Max, so there is no safe late model year — a 2019 C-Max 1.0 EcoBoost has the same wet belt as a 2013 one. Every other C-Max engine, petrol or diesel, uses a conventional dry belt on the outside of the engine.
What happens if the timing belt snaps on a Ford C-Max?
+
Its belt-driven engines are interference designs, which means if the belt snaps the pistons strike the open valves. That causes bent valves and often piston and cylinder-head damage — a repair that frequently runs to four figures and can write off an older car. This is why replacing the belt on schedule, by age as well as mileage, is far cheaper than risking a failure.
