Peugeot 2008 timing belt cost

Illustration of a Peugeot 2008
The short answer

Nearly every petrol 2008 sold between 2013 and 2023 uses a 1.2 PureTech with a timing belt running in the engine oil. From January 2024 the 48V Hybrid versions switched to a chain, but the non-hybrid PureTech kept the wet belt alongside them — so registration year alone cannot tell you which you have. A timing belt change at a UK independent garage typically costs £240–£682 for a Peugeot 2008 (belt, tensioner and water pump), depending on engine.

Wet-belt warning

Some Peugeot 2008 engines use a wet belt that runs inside the engine in oil. These can shed material if neglected, blocking the oil pump and risking serious engine damage. Use the right oil, change on time, and have it inspected if you hear a rattle on start-up. Check the engine rows below to see if yours is affected — or see our full UK wet-belt engine list.

Does the Peugeot 2008 have a belt or chain?

It depends on the engine. Here's the belt-vs-chain breakdown for the main UK Peugeot 2008 engines, with typical manufacturer replacement intervals (always confirm against your own handbook):

EngineTypeInterval
1.2 PureTech 82 non-turbo petrol (2013–2019)
The cheap entry-level engine is a wet belt as well — it is not exempt. Budget for the belt at six years regardless of how few miles the car has done.
Wet belt (in oil)62,000 mi / 6 yr
1.2 PureTech 110 / 130 turbo petrol (2015–2019)
The belt sheds material into the sump rather than snapping cleanly, and the debris blocks the oil pickup. Any oil-pressure warning on braking or cornering should be treated as an emergency, not a sensor fault.
Wet belt (in oil)62,000 mi / 6 yr
1.6 VTi petrol (2013–2015)
The only chain petrol in the first-generation 2008 — no belt bill, but listen for cold-start rattle, which points to a stretched chain or a bled-down tensioner.
Timing chainNo set interval
1.4 HDi diesel (2013–2015)
Conventional dry belt. Change the water pump and tensioner with it, since labour dominates the bill.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.6 HDi / BlueHDi diesel (2013–2018)
Dry external belt and no camshaft-chain issue — the lower-risk of the two diesels offered.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.5 BlueHDi diesel (2018–2022)
Replaced the 1.6 in mid-2018. The belt is a routine dry item; the real risk is the cam-to-cam chain in the head, covered by Stellantis to 10 years / 150,000 miles on engines built October 2017 to January 2023.
Timing belt112,000 mi / 10 yr
1.2 PureTech 100 / 130 / 155 turbo non-hybrid petrol (2019–2025)
The non-hybrid PureTech kept the wet belt right through the 2024 facelift, so a 2024 or 2025 non-hybrid 2008 still needs the six-year belt change even though the hybrid parked next to it does not.
Wet belt (in oil)62,000 mi / 6 yr
1.2 PureTech Hybrid 136 / 145 48V petrol (2024 on)
The 48V mild hybrid uses the third-generation chain-driven engine — no wet belt and no scheduled timing replacement.

Peugeot 2008 timing belt cost

For belt engines, a full timing belt service (belt, tensioner and water pump) at a UK independent garage typically costs £240–£682. Main dealers charge 30–50% more. Chain-driven variants have no scheduled change but cost more in labour if a chain fails.

Key things to know

  • This is the model where the year is most misleading. From January 2024 the 2008 was sold with two different timing drives at once: Hybrid 136/145 is a chain, PureTech 100 is a wet belt.
  • Physical check: on the chain engine the oil filler cap is built into the engine cover. A separate cap means the wet belt.
  • The diesel switch is mid-2018 — 1.6 BlueHDi before, 1.5 BlueHDi after. Only the 1.5 carries the camshaft-chain programme.
  • The e-2008 is electric and has no timing drive.

Questions Okay gets asked a lot

How much does a timing belt cost for a Peugeot 2008?

+

A timing belt replacement on a Peugeot 2008 typically costs £240–£682 at a UK independent garage in 2026, covering the belt, tensioner and water pump together. The exact figure depends on the engine and your area; main dealers charge more. Use our cost calculator to estimate the price for your specific car and region.

My Peugeot 2008 is a 2024 car — does it still have the wet belt?

+

It depends entirely on the version, not the year. From January 2024 Peugeot sold the 2008 with two different engines side by side. The Hybrid 136 and later Hybrid 145, which pair a 48V mild-hybrid system with an automatic gearbox, use the third-generation PureTech with a timing chain and have no scheduled timing replacement. The plain PureTech 100 manual kept the older wet-belt engine and still needs the belt at six years or roughly 62,000 miles. If the oil filler cap is built into the engine cover, you have the chain version.

What happens if the timing belt snaps on a Peugeot 2008?

+

Its belt-driven engines are interference designs, which means if the belt snaps the pistons strike the open valves. That causes bent valves and often piston and cylinder-head damage — a repair that frequently runs to four figures and can write off an older car. This is why replacing the belt on schedule, by age as well as mileage, is far cheaper than risking a failure.
