Grinding Noise When Braking: What It Means and What to Do

Few car noises are as unambiguous as a grind when you press the brake pedal. A squeak might be rust, a rattle might be trim — but a genuine metallic grinding under braking almost always means one thing: your brake pads have worn through, and metal is now rubbing on metal.

The Most Likely Cause: Pads Worn to the Metal

Brake pads are a sandwich: friction material bonded to a steel backing plate. The friction material is the bit designed to wear; the steel backing is not. When the material is used up, the backing plate clamps directly onto the cast-iron disc — and that's the grinding you hear.

The RAC puts it plainly: if you hear a grinding noise, it's likely the pads have been worn down completely — and their advice is that you should not drive the vehicle until the brakes have been checked and replaced. The AA says the same: a scraping or grinding sound makes a garage visit urgent — don't drive any further until the brakes have been checked.

Metal-on-metal braking is bad news three ways at once:

  • You stop worse. Steel on iron generates far less friction than pad material — you may notice longer stops, more pedal effort, or the ABS chiming in earlier than usual.
  • You're destroying the disc. The backing plate scores grooves into the disc face with every stop. Left long enough it carves a pronounced lip, and the disc (sometimes the caliper too) joins the bill.

Squeal First, Grind Second: The Wear Indicator

Brakes rarely go from fine to grinding overnight. Most pads carry a wear indicator — a small metal tab positioned to touch the disc when the friction material gets low, deliberately making a high-pitched squeal as an early warning. Many cars add an electronic sensor that lights a dashboard warning when the pad is down to around 3mm.

That squeal stage is the cheap window: the discs are still healthy and a pads-only job is usually possible. Ignore the squeal for a few weeks and the grind arrives — which is why the two noises deserve different reactions. Squeal: book it in soon. Grind: stop driving and get it inspected.

In rough order of likelihood:

A few of these deserve a closer look:

Morning grind after rain. Brake discs are bare cast iron and rust visibly overnight — especially after rain, a wash, or a few days parked. The first few stops scrape the film off and the noise disappears. That's normal. The exception is a car that sits for weeks: rear discs in particular do so little work that corrosion can pit them permanently, which is one of the most common MOT advisories on low-mileage cars.

The trapped stone. Road grit can wedge between pad and disc and scrape audibly. It usually gets pushed through and spat out on its own; if the noise persists, a garage can pop the wheel off and clear it in minutes.

The seized caliper. This is the grinding cause people miss, because it grinds all the time, not just under braking — the caliper is holding the pad clamped against the disc constantly. Telltales: the car pulls to one side, feels sluggish, and one wheel is noticeably hot after a drive. Kwik Fit's guidance is blunt about the worst case: a binding brake can generate enough heat to start a fire. A hot wheel is a stop-driving symptom.

The wheel-bearing impostor. A worn bearing makes a grinding drone tied to road speed — it carries on whether or not you're braking, and often changes tone through bends as the load shifts. Is It Safe to Drive With Grinding Brakes?

The honest, sourced answer: no, and nobody credible will give you a mileage.

  • The RAC: if you hear grinding, the pads have likely worn down completely and "you should not drive the vehicle" — arrange for the brakes to be checked and replaced as soon as possible.
  • The AA: a scraping or grinding sound means "don't drive your car any further until the brakes have been checked."

There's a legal layer on top of the safety one. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations require every part of a car's braking system to be "maintained in good and efficient working order". Driving with defective brakes is endorsement code CU10 — 3 penalty points, and the RAC notes that driving a car in a dangerous condition can mean a fine of up to £2,500, points and a possible ban.

Grinding Brakes and the MOT

Here's the detail most articles get wrong: the MOT inspection manual contains no defect for brake noise. A tester can't fail a car for grinding as such. What they can fail is everything grinding implies:

Two things follow from that table. First, brakes that grind almost never pass — between the visual pad/disc checks and the roller brake test, the underlying wear gets caught even though the noise itself isn't tested. Second, a dangerous result means the car legally can't be driven away from the test, so "I'll let the MOT decide" is an expensive strategy.

What the Repair Costs in 2026

Because grinding almost always means the discs are scored, budget for pads and discs together on the affected axle:

  • Pads only (if you caught it at the squeal stage): typically £80–£200 fitted depending on the car.
  • Pads and discs, per axle: roughly £140–£230 on a small car, £170–£270 on a medium hatchback, £190–£320 on an SUV and £220–£380 on a premium model.
  • A seized caliper adds parts and labour on top — and on cars with electronic parking brakes, rear brake work needs diagnostic time to wind the calipers back safely.

What a Garage Will Actually Do

A proper brake inspection is more than a glance through the wheel spokes:

  1. Wheels off, both sides. Pad thickness is measured on the inner and outer pads — they often wear unevenly, especially with a lazy caliper slider.
  2. Discs measured and inspected. Thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, plus scoring, lips, cracks and corrosion. Once grinding has happened, discs rarely survive this check.
  3. Calipers and sliders checked. Any seizing, corrosion or perished parts get flagged — fitting fresh pads to a sticking caliper just wears them out again in months.
  4. Replacement in axle sets with the hardware, then a road test.
  5. Bedding-in advice — gentle braking for the first stretch so the new pads mate to the new discs properly.
